"Blackjack is the only casino game
an amateur can learn to play and
at which he can definitely win."
There are a lot of different blackjack strategies, some more complex than others.
But here are some rules of thumb to follow once the cards are dealt.
- Always hit if you have 11 or less.
- If the dealer's up card is 7 or higher, then you should hit if your hand is
between 12 and 16 (inclusive).
- If the dealer's up card is a 9, 10, or ace, then you should hit on a soft
18 (one of your cards is an ace).
- In all other circumstances, you should stay.
Here are some strategies for deciding when to double down.
- Always double down with a score of 11.
- If the dealer's up card is 9 or less, then double down on a 10.
- If the dealer's up card is between 3 and 6 (inclusive), then double down on a 9.
- If the dealer's up card is between 4 and 6 (inclusive), then you should
double down if you have an ace and another card between 2 and 7 (inclusive).
Finally, here's some strategies to help you know when you split a hand
in blackjack.
- Always split aces and eights.
- Never split fours, fives, or tens.
- If the dealer's up card is between 3 and 7 (inclusive), then split
your hand if you have twos, threes, sixes, or sevens.
- If the dealer's up card is between 2 and 6 (inclusive) or an 8 or 9,
then you should split a pair of nines.
These blackjack strategies are all rules of thumb and not written in stone.
You should play with them a bit and see what works for you. Some people like
to be a little more aggressive, and some like to be more conservative.
You can also increase your chances of winning with tested
betting strategies.
